HOW CAT PERCENTILE IS CALCULATED?

Before we learn how is the CAT percentile calculated, let us know what these terms actually mean and how is  percentage different from percentile.

Let's start with an example:

Suppose Simran gave her standard 9th yearly exam in which she scored 450 out of total 500, so her percentage would be calculated as :

Marks Obtained/ Total Marks*100

450/500*100 = 90℅

This is how we have been calculating percentage score since  our school days. Percentage thus, is an absolute analysis.

Now if we talk about percentile

Percentile basically means percentage of values found under a specific value. In statistics it is a score below which a given percentage k of scores in its frequency distribution falls or a score at or below which a given percentage falls. It is thus a relative analysis .

For example 85% percentile is the value where 85% of all measurements are under it and 15% of measurements are over it.

How Is CAT Percentile Calculated?

CAT percentile is that vital measure which determines your admission in a b-school.To calculate CAT percentile you need to know total  number of students who appeared in the exam in the given year and your rank.

CAT Percentile= [1-{Rank/ Total Students Appeared}]*100

For Example ,a total of 2,25,500 students appeared for CAT exam and you scored  a rank of 5000, your CAT percentile would be:

[1-{5000/2,25,500}]*100=97.78% percentile
