Thinking or preparing for CAT 2026? So one of the first thing you need  to know is the CAT syllabus. CAT is divided into three sections - Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). Each section tests different sets of skills and aptitude, so thorough understanding and preparation for all three sections are important.

As the CAT syllabus is not officially given by IIMs in a fixed chapter-wise format. So the topics mentioned below are based on the questions and patterns seen in previous CAT papers

So, before starting your preparation, it is useful to know the important topics and their expected weightage.

CAT 2026 Exam Pattern

CAT has three sections:

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)
  • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)
  • Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

In the recent CAT pattern, there are 68 questions in total. Each section gets 40 minutes

          Section Number of   Questions          Time
          VARC            24    40 minutes
          DILR            22    40 minutes
            QA            22    40 minutes
          Total            68    120 minutes

The CAT exam is computer-based and candidates have to attempt each section within the given time. You cannot switch between sections during the exam.

CAT 2026 VARC Syllabus

Verbal Ability and reading comprehension are divided mainly into Reading Comprehension (RC) and Verbal Ability (VA).This section mainly checks your reading verbal ability. Reading Comprehension usually makes up the larger part of the section as it has more questions compared to Verbal Ability. This is why students preparing for CAT should spend enough time practising RC passages.

Reading Comprehension Topics

Some common types of RC questions are:

  • Main idea of the passage
  • Central theme
  • Inference-based questions
  • Author’s point of view
  • Tone of the author
  • Arguments and conclusions
  • Supporting details
  • Meaning of words according to the passage

The passages can be from different fields and topics. Like some of the common subjects are science, history, philosophy, economics, society, environment and other areas.

So students should practice and get some knowledge about different kinds of topics.

Verbal Ability Topics

The main topics under Verbal Ability are:

  • Para Jumbles
  • Para Summary
  • Odd Sentence Out
  • Paragraph Completion
  • Sentence Arrangement

CAT VARC Topic-Wise Weightage

The exact number of the questions is not fixed. It can change from one paper to another.

However, based on previous papers, the general distribution is something like:

                     Topic            Approx. Questions
      Reading Comprehension                  Around 16
              Para Jumbles                        2-4
              Para Summary                        2-4
          Odd Sentence Out                        1-2

Students should not entirely depend on these numbers because the actual CAT 2026 paper can have a different distribution.

Reading regularly can help aspirants improve their comprehension and reading speed. You can read newspapers, articles, editorials, essays on going news around the world and other good-quality content.

One mistake to avoid

Don’t spend all your VARC preparation time learning difficult words.

Vocabulary can definitely help, but RC is not simply a vocabulary test. You can know the meaning of every word in a passage and still get the question wrong if you haven’t understood the author’s argument.

CAT 2026 DILR Syllabus

DILR stands for Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning.

This section can feel confusing in the beginning because the question are usually given in the form of sets.

You may get a table, graph, arrangement or a situation and then have to answer several question based on it.

Data Interpretation Topics

Important DI topics include:

  • Tables
  • Bar Graph
  • Line Graph
  • Pie Chart
  • Caselets
  • Mixed Graphs
  • Missing Data
  • Data-based questions

Logical Reasoning Topics

Some important LR topics are:

  • Seating Arrangement
  • Distribution
  • Selection
  • Ranking
  • Scheduling
  • Games and Tournaments
  • Team Formation
  • Team Formation
  • Routes and Networks
  • Venn Diagrams
  • Matrix-based questions

CAT DILR Preparation

The difficulty of DILR can be different in different CAT slots. Sometimes a set may look difficult but becomes manageable once the correct approach is found.

Most important thing is set selection. During mocks, you should learn which set to attempt first and which set to leave and also there is no single formula for preparing DILR. Practising different types of sets is the only best way to master it.

CAT 2026 QA Syllabus

QA stands for Quantitative Aptitude. This section mainly covers mathematics topics.

The major areas in QA are:

  • Arithmetic
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Number System
  • Modern Mathematics

Arithmetic

Arithmetic is an important part of the CAT QA section.

Topics include:

  • Percentage
  • Profit and Loss
  • Ratio and proportion
  • Averages
  • Simple Interest
  • Compound Interest
  • Time and Work
  • Mixture and Alligation

Algebra

Important Algebra topics include:

  • Linear Equations
  • Quadratic Equations
  • Polynomials
  • Inequalities
  • Logarithms
  • Functions
  • Progressions
  • Algebraic Expressions

Geometry and Mensuration

The important topics are:

  • Lines and Angles
  • Triangles
  • Circles
  • Quadrilaterals
  • Polygons
  • Coordinate Geometry
  • Mensuration

Number System

Some of the topics covered in Number System are:

  • Factors
  • Multiples
  • Divisibility
  • Remainders
  • HCF and LCM
  • Factorials
  • Properties of Numbers

Modern Mathematics

This includes topics like:

  • Permutation and Combination
  • Probability
  • Set Theory

CAT 2026 QA Topic-Wise Weightage

In this also there is no fixed official weightage for the QA topics. However as we compare from the previous CAT papers here we can show the significant number of questions of Arithmetic and Algebra.

A rough idea of the distribution is:

              QA Topic        Approx. Weightage
                Arithmetic                40-50%
                Algebra                30-35%
    Geometry & Mensuration                10-15%
          Number System                  5-10%
        Modern Mathematics                  5-10%

This is only an expected trend based on previous papers. The actual CAT 2026 paper may have a different distribution.

CAT 2026 Important Chapters

Knowing the important chapters can help students decide where to start their preparation. But it does not mean that other chapters can be completely ignored.

VARC Important Topics

  • Number System

How to prepare for CAT 2026?

After getting acquaintance with CAT 2026 syllabus, now one should move towards a Preparation Plan.

First thing first is to complete your basic concepts. This is especially important for QA. As if its not clear then its gonna be difficult in solving CAT or higher level questions.

Then start with important topics and then slowly cover the remaining topics.

For VARC, try to read regularly through any valid sources like newspapers, articles, editorials and other world related news can help improve your reading and understanding speed.

As for DILR, solve as much sets as possible of different kinds and also at starting focus more on solving the whole set rather than focusing on time limit.

PYQ’s are also very important, as they provide you with the structure of the paper, difficulty level and the varieties of questions asked in CAT

Mock tests should be on your priority list. But just giving it is not enough. You should spend an adequate amount of time analyzing the mock. Check the questions you got wrong, questions where you took too much time, two options you were confused between, questions which you could have solved but left due to time limit or any other issue and also check the answers or options that were wrong and try to find why.

VARC requires good reading and comprehension skills, DILR requires set practice and QA requires strong mathematical basics.

With regular practice and understanding, mock tests and proper analysis, students can gradually improve their CAT preparation.
